Short account of Montenegro
Montenegro, in local language Crna Gora, means the Black Mountain. The mountains are high and cover most of the country. Montenegro was a republic in former Yugoslavia and after the disintegration of the country, it entered into a union with Serbia. After a referendum, Montenegro declared its independence. It has a population of about 650.000 people.
Montenegro borders on the Adriatic Sea, Crotia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania.
We have several times been in Montenegro. During many years, we have stayed in Herceg Novi at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. Herceg Novi is a very nice town filled with energy during the summer.
An excursion around the Bay of Kotor and a visit to the picturesque Town of Kotor is a very nice experience. Behind Kotor lies the Lovcen mountain - the Black Mountain - and the national park of Lovcen with the Njegos Mausoleum. Njegos was both a leader of Montenegro as well as a famous poet. He lived from 1813 to 1851.
Budva and the small island Sveti Stefan is also worth a visit.
